VELVA, N.D. – Officials here believe the Souris River has crested. The river level is 1,514.5 feet and dropped 0.2 inch overnight, according to Maria Effertz Hanson, public information officer.
Levee construction is complete, but a contractor and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff are on site to assist if major erosion occurs.
Two 1ton sandbags from the National Guard are also on site if needed.
The National Guard will remain stationed in Velva for traffic control, security and dike patrol.
Residents evacuated 90 percent of the city by Saturday night. A Red Cross shelter was opened in Turtle Lake, but all residents have found places to stay and no one from Velva has used that shelter.
