CBS Radio News confirmed via a family spokesperson that Falk died on the evening of June 23.
Besides the hit drama, Falk was nominated for two Academy Awards, for 1960′s ‘Murder, Inc.’ and 1961′s ‘Pocketful of Miracles.’ His last credited film role was the 2009 flick ‘American Cowslip’ opposite Cloris Leachman and Diane Ladd.
Falk is survived by wife Shera Danese Falk and adopted daughters Jackie and Catherine. After Falk fell ill following a surgical procedure in 2009, Shera Danese released a statement on PeterFalk.com, placing the site on hiatus.
Falk suffered from dementia and late in his life he reportedly could not recall his most famous character, Colombo.
Falk of course remains best known for his starring role in Colombo, a series about a charmingly nonchalant detective which ran on-and-off between 1971 and 2003. Colombo is one of those programs that younger audiences of today may not know much about, but given the chance, would likely enjoy it due to Falk’s immensely likable and subtle yet effective performances. His glass eye (removed at a young age because of a malignant tumor) never seemed to hinder his career on-screen, and unless someone pointed it out to you, it wasn’t even that noticeable.
The Colombo character was famous for leaving but then often coming back to the suspect after talking for a while, and adding, “Just one more thing.” That became a signature part of the series.
There is nobody that could play that character other than Peter Falk, and perhaps the news of his death will spark the interest of a new audience to check out DVDs of the series.
Falk was born in New York City and grew up in Ossining, where his parents ran a clothing store. Over a career spanning nearly six-decades he was nominated for two Oscars and won five Emmys
