HAITI: Repons Peyzan or the Emergence of the New Lavalas

After 1986, Lavalas rose to stardom as the last hope while in 2010, Repons Peyizan rose as the last chance but both parties gained their fame from the populo.
For the upcoming mayoral elections, a smart cartel of candidates should be seeking to run under Repons Peyizan, because, at this time, Repons Peyizan is the only thing the nation knows.

As it was after 1986, Haiti was looking for a party; a party that would claim they would be for the people; a party that would emerge as the dividing line between the old good boy network system and the face of Haiti anew. Thus, had surfaced Party Lavalas wihose words against the past government were sharper than knives and words to the people were kind, nice, ass kissing, and courage inspiring; resulting in the nation voting for anything that bore the “coq” emblem or for anybody who would say they were running under Lavalas.

The people of Haiti identified Lavalas – or any other party for that matter – with who the head was; they cared less about the rest of the manisfest. That was the reason so many Lavalas were CASECs, Mayors, Congressmen, etc; a stature to which they would not have gained should they have ran under a different party.

Lavalas branches grew in Haiti as fast as the speed of light; each gained notoriety and installing themselves as authority figures in Haiti so much that during the 1991 elections, the political headlines seemed to have been “Lavalas against the others” if there was any other political party strong enough to stand against them.

Although physically absent on the Haitian political arena for the past seven years, Lavalas has remained the hope and the change of which Haitians could not afford to stop dreaming.

Such tendencies had changed about last year (2010) at the minute rumors had it that Wyclef Jean could be running for President. The people were happy not because they loved the preacher’s son but because they saw in him what they saw in Jean Bertrand Aristide in 1986; a rupture with the traditional politic and the only candidate who could easily mobilize Cite Soleil and Bel Air around him in a splitof a second.

The disqualification of Wyclef paved the way for the next closest thing in the electoral course. Martelly was never considered as a people person but his musical record already embodied what the people wanted, a man who could bring the crowd, a man who could talk the language of the nation, and a man who would call the pig by his/her name, etc.

What it is easy to see in today’s politic is that the prominence of Repons Peyizan is out shadowing the one Lavalas once was because (1) Haitians have a new dream to dream (2) Haitians place their last good hand on Mr. Martelly and (3) Haitians finally realize that Jean Bertrand Aristide returned to Haiti with no political agenda.

At the promptness Repons Peyizan is performing, it is just wise to say that Haitians are on the road to give to Repons Peyizan the same welcome they gave to Lavals in 1986. With Mr. Martelly as President, should they develop the commune to commune strategy; Respons Peyizan can easily propagate throughout the country in a time record as the party of the new generation.

The time for celebration had passed; Repons Peyizan’s leaders must return to work to plan their 2016. The way to win such a future is to see 2016 from the communes and conceivably from the parliament, where at this time, they are yet to be represented.
