TEPCO Says Power Lost To 'Common' Spent Fuel Pool
Press Release (Apr 17,2011)
Status of TEPCO's Facilities and its services after the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake (as of 4:00PM)
Due to the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake which occurred on March
11th 2011, TEPCO's facilities including our nuclear power stations have
been severely damaged. We deeply apologize for the anxiety and
inconvenience caused.
Below is the status of TEPCO's major facilities.
*New items are underlined
[Nuclear Power Station]
Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station:
Units 1 to 3: shutdown due to the earthquake
(Units 4 to 6: outage due to regular inspections)
*From April 15th to April 17th, we threw in ten sandbags including zeolite
in front of the screen rooms of Units 1 to 4. (On April 17th, we threw in
two sandbags between the screen pump rooms of Unit 1 and 2, and five
sandbags between the screen pump rooms of Unit 2 and 3, seven sandbags in
total, and finished the work at 11:15am.)
*At 2:34pm on April 17th, power supplies to a common spent fuel pool was
stopped due to an electrical short circuit at the end of the circuit. We
are investigating the details of the cause.
*At 10:00am on April 17th, we sprayed dust inhibitor at around the
Centralized Radiation Waste Treatment Facility in order to prevent
diffusion of radioactive materials on a trial basis and finished it at
1:30 pm on the same day.
*We conducted surveys of the situation of the inside of the nuclear
reactor building of Unit 3 (a dose of radiation, temperature and
existence or non-existence of a puddle of water, etc.) by a remote
control robot. We are planning to conduct surveys of the situation of
inside of the nuclear reactor building of Unit 1.
Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Station:
Units 1 to 4: shutdown due to the earthquake
Kashiwazaki Kariwa Nuclear Power Station:
Units 1, 5, 6, 7: normal operation
(Units 2 to 4: outage due to regular inspection)
[Thermal Power Station]
-Hirono Thermal Power Station Units 2 and 4: Shutdown due to the
earthquake
-Hitachinaka Thermal Power Station Unit 1: Shutdown due to the earthquake
-Kashima Thermal Power Station Unit 6: Shutdown due to the earthquake
[Hydro Power Station]
-Power supply has returned to normal and facilities damaged by the
earthquake are now being handled in a timely manner.
[Impacts on Transmission Facilities]
-Power supply has returned to normal and facilities damaged by the
earthquake are now being handled in a timely manner.
[Avoidance of further Implementation on Planned Rolling Blackouts and
Request for Conserving Electricity Consumption]
Currently, we are working to restore electricity supply after our nuclear
and thermal power facilities were severely damaged by
Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake. The widespread understanding and
cooperation of our customers to conserve electricity have contributed to
the improvement of this tight power supply-demand balance situation.
Amidst this backdrop, since the electricity supply will be able to
balance with the demand for the time being, we have decided not to
implement further rolling blackouts in principle.
However, we must sincerely ask for your continued cooperation in reducing
electricity consumption due to the possible increase in demand caused by
warmer weather or unexpected trouble at power stations that are currently
being restored to service. In case the electricity supply-demand balance
becomes tighter than expected, as stated, we may reluctantly restart the
implementation of rolling blackouts. We kindly ask for your cooperation.
We will do our best to maintain this policy of avoiding further
implementation of rolling blackouts during the summer.
