Nevada Republican John Ensign will resign from the U.S. Senate on May 3, he announced in a statement on Thursday.
"The turbulence of these last few years is greatly surpassed by the incredible privilege that I feel to have been entrusted to serve the people of Nevada," Ensign said.
Rocked by scandal surrounding an extramarital affair, Ensign announced last month that he would not seek re-election in 2012.
The senator said he would submit a letter of resignation to Vice President Joe Biden on Friday.
