Japan Admits Nuclear Reactor Core Possibly Fractured

Japanese nuclear officialdom has sheepishly admitted a reactor at the tsunami-damaged Fukushima nuclear plant is probably cracked and emitting deadly levels of radiation.

“The contaminated water had 10,000 times the amount of radiation as would be found in water circulating from a normally operating reactor,” said Hidehiko Nishiyama, a spokesman for Japan’s nuclear safety agency. “It is possible that there is damage to the reactor.”
The Japanese government’s chief spokesman, Yukio Edano, said residents of northern Japan have been exposed to radiation for some time. TEPCO and the government ha insisted for weeks that damaged reactors and exposed nuclear fuel rods at the plant did not pose a threat to the public.

Officialdom prepared the public for more exposure to radiation.
“We are exploring every possibility, but we don’t think this is a new situation, rather that a certain amount of radiation may have leaked from the reactor. This is a possibility that we have been mentioning for some time,” Edano said.
“But at this point we don’t know if the radiation is coming from the reactor itself or from another source.”
In a televised address Friday evening, Japanese president Naoto Kan characterized the situation at the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant as “grave and serious.” He apologized to farmers and business owners in the vicinity of the plant for destroying their business.

Despite the fact the Japanese are unable to contain the emission of radiation from the plant, the EPA on Thursday assured Americans they have nothing to fear. “As the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has said, we do not expect to see radiation at harmful levels reaching the U.S. from damaged Japanese nuclear power plants,” the agency stated in its latest Daily Data Summary.
