Pine Valley has been a daytime destination 41-years, but in the increasingly uncertain world of the American soap opera, it could soon be wiped off of the fictional map.
Deadline joins Daytime Confidential as the latest outlet to report that ABC is considering reducing its afternoon drama lineup from three to two hours to make room for a new talk show. And "All My Children" is most eligible for the chopping block.
Citing low ratings (recent record lows in daytime's pivotal women 18-49 demographic), Deadline says "AMC" is the likely candidate for cancellation if the network opts to add a new talk show for fall 2011. This would leave some of daytime's most familiar faces, including Susan Lucci, Rebecca Budig and Cameron Mathison, without a home.
ABC has remained safe from the great soap purge -- which has seen CBS' "As the World Turns" and "Guiding Light" and NBC's "Passions" all go by the wayside -- largely because of fellow Disney-owned SOAPnet. But that too will go by the wayside in 2012, when it will be rebranded as Disney Junior.
Still, "All My Children" is just a notch below fellow ABC soap "One Life to Live" in the daytime ratings. "OLTL" is also ABC's last soap being produced in New York, with "Children" moving production to Los Angeles in 2010. If cancellation is imminent, it seems it could be either one.
