The carnival in Port-au-Prince will take place the 6.7 and 8 March under the theme "Ann selebre lavi. The set up is continuing. Of 38 bands that participated walk Sunday in a contest 10 will be selected for the carnival parade during the three feast days. Their names will be announced this Wednesday, as the Carnival Committee announces a set of arrangements for the smooth running of this popular festival.

But the rub is that the organizers lack the funds to less than one week prior to achieving this cultural activity whose budget is 90 million bottles.

"It is likely that there are only 30 million bottles of the Treasury," said Fresnel Louis, coordinator of the carnival committee. The Haitian government has so far disbursed 25 million, according to Peter Olson, head of communications and public relations for mayor of Port-au-Prince.

The private business sector will provide the remaining 65 million, the organizers had hoped. "We are negotiating to find other funds," said Louis.

Meanwhile, the Carnival Committee has announced a reduction in the number of floats this year. They will be only three to scroll, according to Alain Augustine, artistic director of the Carnival Committee.

"There will be a tank that will show the various plans and models for the reconstruction of Port-au-Prince, including the town hall. Another tank will highlight historical figures from women and contemporary feminists. Hence, we held in honor, in particular, the memory of feminists as Magalie Marcelin, Anne Marie Myriam Merlet and Coriolanus, who died in the earthquake of 12 January, "said Mr. Augustine.

This year the carnival route is changed. It stretches from the City's Fair (the Bicentennial) via the Boulevard Jean-Jacques Dessalines (Grand Street), Rue Paul VI (or Barracks Street) and Rue de la Republique to arrive at the Stade Sylvio Cator Street to Oswald Durand. There will not parade in front of the Rex Theatre in the street Capois as was the case before the earthquake of January 12 last year.
