Shooting in Poughkeepsie, New York

(CNN) – A veteran police officer died of his injuries Friday after a shootout in Poughkeepsie, New York, according to the Poughkeepsie Police Department. The name of the deceased officer, a veteran of 18 years the department has not been released pending notification of relatives.
Another policeman was treated for minor injuries at Vasser Medical Center, Poughkeepsie Police Chief Ronald Knapp said during an afternoon press conference Friday. “Today is the worst day of our city has seen perhaps in our history,” said Mayor Mike Tkazyik.

Two other people died in the incident. The alleged killer died of gunshot wounds at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, according to spokesman Greg Zurawick hospital. Another victim, an unidentified woman was also hit, according to Knapp. It is considered the wife’s alleged killer.
The Director of the deceased suffered a single bullet to the head, according to Knapp.
A confrontation began around 13 pm Friday after authorities received reports of Poughkeepsie a shooting in a small parking lot. An officer noticed a man fleeing the scene of the shooting with a child in her arms and tried to confront the man.
The police are not yet releasing the name of the agent 44-years, until all family members are informed. He was a veteran of 18 years in the department.
A press conference is scheduled today at noon at the Poughkeepsie City Hall, 62 Civic Center Plaza.
The police continue their investigation into Friday’s rampage that also left two other people. Police said a man apparently killed his wife while she was in a car in a parking lot downtown. The alleged gunman was then fatally wounded in a clash with police.
Outside, the night Police Department Friday was a flag at half-mast in memory of an officer killed doing his job.
“Today is perhaps the worst day of our city has seen perhaps in our history,” said Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik.
The officer, a veteran of 18 years whose name was not immediately released, was shot in the head during a harrowing scene at the Poughkeepsie train station after responding to gunfire, the Sean Hennessey reports CBS 2.
“He saw the object leave the scene with a child in her arms,” Poughkeepsie Police Chief Ron Knapp said.
