Hostel: What is a hostel?

Youth Hostel of Ponta Delgada: front of the hostel

Hostels are a great way to see the world on a budget. From the cheapest to the more grand there is something to accommodate every taste and budget. The great thing about hostels is that tons of college students flock to them because they’re cheap and fun so there’s always plenty of student travelers around to party with!In most every other part of the world hostels are the main way people stay while visiting a foreign place. A hostel is a room, usually bunk beds or twin beds. They are occupied by two to up to twelve people and possibly even more. You can book online how many beds you want to reserve. This is how you pay by the night. And if you wish to reserve all the beds in the room you have to do that while booking. Most hostels have bathrooms outside the room in a communal style. Only “en suite” rooms have their own private bathroom.
What’s so much fun about staying in a hostel is that there are more ways to accommodate large groups, like if you are traveling with your college friends on spring break. Hostels are designed kind of like a summer camp, except no insects, hopefully. Just kidding. Hostels are the best way to see the sights and stay in some of the best cities in the world. The best part is you don’t have to break the bank to travel the world. Hotels can be very pricey in places like Paris, Milan, and London. Hostels are the best alternative. Many hostels come with kitchens fully equipped with stoves, ovens, and utensils. This is another great perk of staying here. Saving money in any little way you can is what allows you to travel more.
No hostel is alike either. For the most part in large cities they offer private and non private rooms with bathrooms on the same floor as your room. Most offer some type of breakfast, but don’t expect anything fancy. And not all provide 24 hour staff. So it is up to you to remember your key. And then there are the hostels that are designed with the college student in mind. Many resort towns have hostels that provide full breakfasts, cocktail hours, and dinners (for a small charge). Many provide transportation to the beach, clubs, and other attractions. Some even have trips and excursions around the area.
Hostels attract mostly college students and young adults. So don’t worry about running into too many families or old people. Everything you need is here. The kitchen accessibility, free computers, lounges, and often phone use means you can leave the worry at home and focus on having fun. Website like studentuniverse.com offer great rates for hostels and allow you to book your beds however many you want. Now all you have to decide is where you want to go first. A lot of hostels are even specified as “youth hostels.”
